Doc in iCloud

I have a word doc on my mac. I edited it on my iPad with pages. It's in the cloud but I can't open it again on my mac in word to finish the edits. It opens in preview. How do I use iCould properly to be able to edit documents on all of my devices and keep them in the cloud?
