My kids locked the ipad--

The kids tried to out smart mom. They thought they would continue to try different codes until they got it right with just luck. Now however they locked it up and the ipad will no longer let me even enter the code. Help--I know the code but the ipad says I have to connect with itunes. Itunes will not open up because the ipad is locked--Can anyone help?
