Q: Downloading Mavericks is taking DAYS!  Literally.  This is stupid.  Is there no hard-copy disc to use instead of this do-nothing download?

I've been trying for months to upgrade my computer with this "free" upgrade that has cost me a fortune in wasted data-transmission time.  The download-only upgrade is a failure.  It stops unexpected, puts itself on pause, and and dies.  I've messages say it will take as much as 8800 hours to download.  I'm trying again right now and it's telling me the download time will be 18+ hours.  I live in the middle of one of the most wired cities in the nation and never have problems except with this utterly frustrating free download upgrade.  What a mess!!

Does anybody know of anywhere I can get a hard-copy disc to make this a sane, efficient process?

Thank you.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Which version are you downloading?  Are you really still running OS X 10.6.8?

Maybe bring an 8GB Flash drive to your nearest Apple Store and ask them if they can put it on that.

Apple servers are probably being hit hard by other users, like you, trying to download and install this latest update.

I am waiting this out until the beginning of next week, or so to download this as I anticipated the weekend will slam Apple's servers, once again, as users try to download this update then.

If you are in that much of a hurry, you could try bringing your Mac into an Apple Store an see if they can do the update for you. You may have to leave it there until they are done with it.

Do you have a backup of all your important data?

Duh.  I'd be trying to download the veriosn Apple shoves in my face from the App store.  Your silly question of my OS tells me you're not interested in being helpful but are merely looking for ways to promote your own self-agrandizement.  I don't have the time.

Thank you, MichelPM.  Yes, I have a back-up on an external hard drive.  I'll call the local Apple store and see about having them install it.  Bet it costs a fortune, making an even bigger joke out of this "free" upgrade.

I sure miss the Apple I fell in love with 30 years ago.

How fast (or slow) is your internet connection, Mavericks should take less than an hour to download (I just downloaded a copy when I read your first post, 25 minutes is all it took) but I do have a fast pipe.

Might help to make them more cooperative if you already have it partioned (one partition GUID) and formatted, MacOS Extended (journaled.)

    Instructions for doing that here.

Why is it a shock for you that someone is still running their Mac on OS X 10.6.8?

    Apple still sells it!

There are still quite a big amount of users still using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Count me as one of them.

I have Mavericks installed on an. external hard drive, but some of my critical working software is older and I still need Snow Leopard. I don't think I am in the minority, either.

It is still the best OS X version of what I consider to be the "real" and "orignal" OS X, before all of the drastic changes and incorporation of iOS features into the OS.

If there is a charge for doing this, I don't think it will be exorbitant. It may help if you can get eveything setup for your Mac to easily accept the download and installation,

It wasn't meant to express shock, but rather as a determination of whether you're trying to download the rather large full Mavericks installer as opposed to the upgrade to 10.9.2 that was released a few days ago.

Many people upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion or Mavericks and forget to update their profile information accordingly.

We Snow Leopard defenders and hold-outs are a touchy group.

    Yeah,

That's true enough. I wasn't thinking that way, but yeah, your correct about that.
