I have the latest version of iTunes. The device is listed in my iTunes. Just switched phones - how do I check phone ID number to know if the iPhone listed is the one I have now?

Let me try again. While trying to sync my new iPhone with iTunes to my computer, I got this message:
"iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the iPhone disconnected."
So I wondered if my computer was trying to back up my old iPhone. I checked the Serial number (the phone id number if referred to earlier) and yes it was. So I added the new phone...and got the same error message. Rats.
any ideas?
