Having difficulty installing Migration Assistant in Snow Leopard

I am attemping to install Migration Assistant for Snow Leopard (v1.1). I was getting an "unexpected error" notice when running the installation through Software Update, so tried downloading it directly from Apple. The download worked fine, but just before the installation finished, it also quit due to an error. Here is a screen shot including the error message. I saw some people had issues installing Migration Assistant onto Windows machines, but this is a Mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.8. Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how I can get it to successfull install? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, I was not clear about the versions before. I currently have Migration Assistant version 3.0.4 installed. The update is listed as Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard v1.1 here: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1694 It seems to be associated with migrating to Mavericks, which I may do at some point as much as I like Snow Leopard.

When I run the update through Software Update, this is what it looks like before:

and this is what it looks like after:

Here is the info from the Installer Log (sorry if this is a pain to look at - I'm not sure the best way to display it besides just copy/pasting from the "errors and progress" log window). It looks like the first problem might be related to a "Can't inititiate distribution from ..." line about 1/3 of the way down. Unfortunately I don't really know what any of this means. Any thoughts? Thanks folks!

Yes, I am getting the same results with the installer package (screenshot in original post at the top). Thank you for the suggestion - that makes sense. I repaired permissions, and verified the disk. There were maybe 25 permissions that were successfully repaired, along with one that said it could not be repaired (specifically: "

Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.") I am have no idea if that has any significance.

After restarting and retrying the Migration Assistant Update installation via both the installer package and the Software Update, I still get the same result. Any suggestions for my next step? Thank you for your time by the way! Other than this, everything on my computer runs great.

That permission 'error' isn't significant

If each attempt to install gives the same error in install.log :

>>/Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/InfoPlist.strings): Operation not permitted

then perhaps it's worth checking that specific file

Use Terminal & copy/paste the following line

ls -elO "/Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/da.lproj/InfoPlist.strings"

which is simply a list (ls) command for that one file : it should give a result like this :

-rw-r--r--@ 1 root wheel - 262 30 Jan 2009 ....

>>...mean anything?

Yes : the 'uchg' part shows that the 'user immutable flag' is set for that file at least, and it shouldn't be. That file is included in the update, but cannot be altered. Unhelpfully. permissions repair doesn't correct things like that. Presumably, somebody or something changed it.

It might be just that one file, but let's suppose that there may be others within /Applications...

Back up first, although this shouldn't affect your files or data.

Use Terminal as an Admin user & carefully copy/paste (don't type) the following line : pressing enter if necessary & supplying the Admin user password when prompted, which won't be shown on the screen.

sudo chflags -R nouchg /Applications

That will remove the uchg flag (if present) from all files in /Applications, including the one that we know has it set. The command may take some seconds or longer to complete, depending on how many apps you have.
