Try the following all-purpose steps for dealing with erratic device or sync behaviour. They assume that all of the content you want on the device is in your library ready for restoring. If it isn't see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device first. I would also recommend you copy everything out of the camera roll if you haven't already.

  1. Backup device.
  2. Restore as a new device.
  3. Restore the backup you made earlier.

Use an encrypted backup if you want to preserve passwords, Wi-Fi settings, web history and health data where appropriate. I also suggest syncing with a selection of playlists (unless you're using iCloud Music Library) rather than manually adding content as, if nothing else, the process above is easier to do if you ever have to go through it again. The downside with backup encryption is that if you forget the password when you need it again, which could be years later, you may need to invoke a workaround to turn off encryption as shown in Re: disable encrypted backups, which can only help if your device is in a state that can backup to iCloud.

I'm having the same problem, I have an iPod5 Touch. I've bought the songs on iTunes, and when I've tried to sync, it appears to sync, but when I click on 'recently added' all the song are in grey with a dotted circle next them (not the cloud). The 'sync entire library' option is checked, I've tried unselecting it and reselecting it, clicking apply each time. I've tried manually syncing it. I've tried restarting both my mac and my iPod. I tried to find the 'iCloud Music library' option in my iPod's music settings to turn that off but it wasn't there (although there was a link to find out more about storing my music library on iCloud). I then tried turn my iCloud drive off, but nothing has worked. It's really frustrating!

You may need to set up or update the screen where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to your iPod.

Select the iPod in iTunes. There is a row of buttons toward the top, starting with Summary. Click on Music next to Summary. This is iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.

If your entire iTunes music library can fit on your iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library. Then, any new songs added to your iTunes library sync automatically to the iPod the next time it is connected. Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres. With this setting, those new songs must be included your selection from the lists below. For example, if you have a playlist in iTunes that gets synced to the iPod, you can add those new songs to that playlist.

NOTE: If it's currently NOT set to Sync Music, setting up automatic syncing will replace what is currently on the iPod, based on the selections you make on the iPod's Music screen.

When you click Apply, iTunes syncs your iPod based on how the iPod's Music screen is set up. Going forward, changes to your iTunes music library (related to the iPod's Music screen) sync automatically.

What does "another account" mean? If that "account" is music owned by someone else, you should not transfer it to your iTunes library for legal reasons.

When you set up automatic syncing, iTunes warns you that music currently on the iPod will be replaced by content from the iTunes library on the computer. Any songs that are on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library (on the computer) will be lost. If all of your songs are in your iTunes library, iTunes may erase the iPod, but those songs are still there in your iTunes library, so you can sync them back to the iPod as desired.

It seems that since the last ITunes update, the inability of ITunes to recognize my IPod and my computer to want to reformat is when this problem began. I cannot get ITunes to give me any ability to Select anything regarding my IPod. The first time I connected my IPod after the current ITunes update, I now cannot access anythng on my IPod. IPod reset does not work. Even tried to let the computer reformat and that failed to begin. Just told me i need to get the "Drive G disk out of read only mode". Kenichi, can you help?

The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar. If the sidebar (along left side of window) is not visible, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. When connected, the iPod should appear under DEVICES in the sidebar, where you can select it and perform actions related to the iPod. With the sidebar visible, the iTunes 11.x works (mostly) like previous versions.

If you are prompted to reformat the iPod by the system (Windows), not iTunes, the iPod's storage may be corrupted or faulty. This is more likely of your iPod is the type that has a hard drive for storage (a "classic" iPod), not flash storage (like the iPod nano).

You can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.

If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the computer and connect the iPod. iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore, which you should do. The Restore will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.

I have an older iPod Touch and am having the same problem. iTunes recognizes the iPod and appears to be synching ("sync complete") but nothing happens. I tried synching automatically as well as manually.

I created a new playlist that contained all the music I wanted to sync, selected all the songs, right clicked, selected "Add to Playlist," then selected my iPod from the list. This worked, but Apple needs to fix the problem. I hope that works for you as well.

That's the manual method to add songs to the iPod. If you want to have iTunes do it automatically when you connect it (or click Sync if already connected), you need to set up the iPod's Music screen in iTunes. If it is not set up to sync anything, it will still "sync" when connected, but it will sync nothing. I wrote how to do this in a previous reply, the second one (the reply to the original poster). So, I don't think there is actually a problem, just a "procedural" issue.

If you have created a playlist with songs you want on the iPod, on the iPod's Music screen in iTunes, select that one playlist under Playlists. Going forward, whenever you update that playlist in your iTunes library (add or remove songs), iTunes automatically updates the iPod with the same changes.

I'm having a problem with my ipod touch and I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem. About a month ago, I updated itunes after sticking with the same version for a while, the same day I was cleaning my computer, so I was unninstalling some programs I never use, the thing is I must have deleted one I didn't had to, because from that day on when I connect my ipod or any apple device to my computer, my laptop recognizes it, but itunes doesn't. I tried unninstalling and installing itunes again and again and with different versions to see if my ipod wasn't compatible with the version I had updated but that wasn't the case, I have tried everything I can find on the internet but nothing seems to fix my problem.

Please someone help mee D:

I have tried all that, and iTunes still refuses to transfer to an Ipod tracks downloaded from the iTunes store. It keeps claiming that the computer has not been authorised even though it has been. I have tried de-authorisiong and re-authorising it to no avail. There are too many downloaded tracks to select them manually into a playlist and transfer them from there.

A possible reason for what you describe is that you have (in the past) used more than one Apple ID to make purchases. The Apple ID you currently use may not be the Apple ID you previously used to purchase some of your songs.

Find one of the purchased songs that does not sync to the iPod in your iTunes music library and select it. Right-click and select Get Info. On the Info window's Summary tab, find where is says Apple ID. If that is a song purchased from the iTunes Store, the Apple ID used for the purchase is shown there. Is that your current Apple ID (or a different one)?

If it's a different one, from the menu bar, under Store, select Authorize This Computer. In the window that comes up, where it says Apple ID, enter that other Apple ID (not your current one). Enter the password for that Apple ID. Click Authorize. NOTE: One computer can be authorized with more than one Apple ID, so the authorization for your current Apple ID is still valid. It's now authorized for BOTH Apple IDs.

The songs that do not transfer should now transfer. If some still do not transfer, perhaps you have another Apple ID that was previously used for purchases from the iTunes Store. If so, repeat this process...

NOTE: For songs, this problem should only affect older purchases that use DRM (copy protection). More recent song purchases from the iTunes Store no longer use DRM, although purchased videos (movies, TV shows, and music videos) still use DRM.

I have a similar issue. I tried the steps above, but it only sync my newest 5 CDs, but not the other dozen or so.

I did reinstall win8 without backuo as my music is saved on my home server, and I tell itunes my music is located on my homegroup shared music folder.

Not sure why it won't copy my music over. I have done this several times before I reinstalled windows and it worked fine.

Any other way to get my other albums copied over?

It's really similar, if you are describing physical music CDs, and not songs purchased from the iTunes Store. Songs you import from CDs do not require authorization, so that's not the reason they do not sync to iPods.

Based on your explanation, with the Windows reinstall and use of a "home server" for storage of iTunes content, a possible explanation is that your older songs are not in your current iTunes library. Are the "newest 5 CDs" songs imported into iTunes after the Windows reinstall, and the "other dozen or so" from before?

Show your iTunes music library, in iTunes, to list your songs. Are all of your songs there, or just the "newest 5 CDs"? If it's just those recently added songs, you need to tell iTunes about the previous songs. Just pointing iTunes to the storage location on the home server (in iTunes Preferences) does not add songs that are already there. That just tells iTunes where to store song files going forward.

To add songs, use the File -> Add to Library command from the menu bar. Or, you can open a Windows Explorer window that shows the folder on the home server with all of the song files, and drag that folder (the icon) to the iTunes window (drop on music library).

If that's not the reason for not syncing to iPod (so all of your songs already appear in your current iTunes music library), please post back.
