Hi,

System Preferences > Language and Text.

Select the correct Language.

See also System Preferences > Keyboard > Input sources (you may list two keyboard layout options here)

The layout tends to be referred to a QUERTY layout and is the common part of most Western European based langauges (as far as I am away and to the places those languages are now found)

From your first post it would appear that you have a AZERTY layout chosen.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AZERTY

From the Map on that page it would appear that you are listing the French option as the main choice.

From the System Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources

It tends to show Upper case but it seems to fit with your first post.
