I am trying to migrate files from my Imac to my macbook pro. I pull up the migration assistant on both computers and have both the computers connected by ethernet cord, but each computer never "finds" the other. Also does it matter that the Imac is new and the macbook pro is old (earlier 200's)? The software is updated to the latest for each.

What OS X version are you using on the older MacBook Pro? Can we assume 10.7.5?

Did the update and it said it was successful, but the computers still don't see each other.
Restart the MacBook Pro and make sure that you follow the instructions precisely regarding at what point you make the Ethernet connections relative to starting the applications.
