2ND new PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-107D not mounting

I just replaced my Superdrive twice in 3 months. It burns from iPhoto and iTunes but disappears when inserted and asked "what to do". After I press ok the icon never shows up on desktop and after naming cannot be found with Finder. It shows up in System Profiler but never properly mounts onto desktop. I have tried Disk Utility Perissions and Repairs and the Mac tech guy in my city hasn't bothered to call me back after explaining to him. He was stumped as well and said he would get back. I am running OSX 10.3.9 with no other updates available. It worked after install and archive but I don't want to have to resort to that again as I'm not sure that will accomplish anything. Is there something missing? Firmware, etc?

e mac, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

There was a Superdrive Firmware Update for eMac USB 2.0 models; you might try it and see if that applies to your Mac.

If the drive works OK after an Archive and Install but stops after several days to weeks, one would suspect either some added software is causing a conflict. Sometimes, making sure the maintenance tasks are current helps; see How to Force Background Maintenance, or use any of a number of third-party utilities such as OnyX (make sure any maintenance or disk utility is a version compatible with your OS X version).
