User folder bigger than the sum of its parts

The Finder says my user folder contains 5.93 GB of files. When I add up the sizes of the subfolders displayed by the Finder, it comes to 913.8 MB. Where are the missing files? Can I delete the missing files? I seems as though I don't need them.

1. Either in the Library or in the .Trash subfolders, neither of which is visible by default. To access them, open the home folder, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and supply the path.

2. Items in the .Trash folder can usually just be deleted. For the Library items, it depends on what exactly they are.

I have a related question, so I thought I would ask it here, rather than creating a new thread. According to the Finder my boot drive contains 49 GB of files. When I add up the subfolders displayed in the Finder window for this drive I get a total of 34.5 GB. So where are the extra 14.5 GB? And do I need these files?

(The reason I am asking this question, is that my hard drive is getting rather full, so I wnat to try to trim some files. I noticed after upgrading to Mavericks my 60-GB boot drive went from 28.3 GB used to 49 GB used, yet I don't remember adding very much other data to the drive.)

Thanks for the additional help. Before I check these other invisible folders, maybe I should mention that I just finished cloning the boot drive to an image file on an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. The image file is 33.45 GB. I believe CCC does not clone unnecessary files, so maybe whatever these extra 10+ GB are, they are not necessary. I suppose one easy option would be to reclone the image file back to my boot drive. Perhaps the boot drive would then be just under 34 GB rather than 49 GB.
