Hello Christine2014,

It sounds like you are unable to delete these duplicated emails from the trash in your Mail app. I would start by logging into your email providers webmail for your account and checking the trash there for the emails, then empty the trash of any emails there are. Then open Mail and refresh the mailbox:

Choose Mailbox > Get All New Mail.

From: OS X: New email messages not received until Mail is quit and reopened

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5367

If and only if the account is an IMAP account I recommend removing and re adding the account.

Mail (Mavericks): Remove mail accounts

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14944

Warning: Deleting a POP account permanently deletes its mailboxes and messages from your Mac and cannot be undone. If you back up files using Time Machine, you can use it to recover previous versions of mailboxes.

Restore mailboxes and their content

  1. Choose Mail > Preferences, then click Accounts.
  2. Select an account, then click Remove (-).

Removing an Exchange or IMAP account doesn’t permanently delete the account’s mailboxes and messages because they’re stored on the mail server. To retrieve the account’s mailboxes and messages from the server, add the account again in Mail.

Then:

  1. Open Mail.
  2. Choose Add Account from the File menu. If this is the first time you've opened Mail, you will be automatically prompted to add an account.
  3. Enter your Full Name, email address, and password. See Mac 101: Mail article for more information.

Usually, your email account can be configured automatically for you. If you use an email account that Mail cannot configure automatically, continue with this article.
