Migration assistant from windows 7 to iMac os 10.9
I am using a direct ethernet connection and both computers say that they are ready to transfer files but the mac has a spinning wheel and says "checking PC" and goes no further. What can I do?

Have a look at > Switch Basics: Migrate your Windows files to your Mac
As per that article, you will need > Windows Migration Assistant v1.0.5.6 on your PC.
Both machines must be on the same network, and the Ethernet cable needs to be connected between the two computers, not using your router. If you still cannot get it call AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support.
I suggest toy start over, First I Would go up to your Black Apple upper Left and do a Software Update, then I would Restart both Machines let them boot completly up and start over.
My guess this whould solve your problem

Thank you for your suggestions. I updated the mac and restarted both machines but but unfortunately no success.
Forget Migration assistant. Just Copy your personal files to an extrernal drive then move that drive to the Mac and copy them from the eternal to the Mac. The drive can be foramatted in any way as OS X can Read from Windows NTFS formatted drives.
There is nothing else on the Windows computer that can be used on the Mac. No programs, settings or options.
And when and if you ever get the Migration system to work it will create a Second User account on the Mac and you'll be posting back with "How Do I Find My Files that I Migrated Over From a Windows PC".
I suppose there is no hope of getting my outlook notes transferd over to the notes on the imac then?

There might be, Google it to see what you find. If all there are is .txt notes then put them on an EHD and drag them to the Mac.
