I'm trying to use subtitiles with a movie I imported to iTunes. I know you can change language and subtitle settings by -iTunes-Preferences-Playback and selecting the language from the menu. Except I dont have the menu. It's just not there. I tried reinstalling itunes and it make a difference. Can anyone help please?

Perhaps that menu only shows if the video is capable of featuring subtitles, as not all films have that function. Have you tried an old video that worked in the past?
I have the exact same screenshot as you do. All my movies have English subtitles that I can turn on in the playback window itself, but I want to turn them on by default instead of having to turn them on each time I play a video.
Two different Apple support documents say those options are supposed to be there in iTunes 11...
Same here: I remember this option being there in previous iTunes versions – and I’ve used it to set it to a different language than my system preference – and now it’s gone and I have to switch language for each movie individually.
iTunes 11.1.5 on a clean install of Mac OS X 10.9.2, double checked on another Mac with an upgraded Mac OS X 10.9.2, same iTunes version, same (lack of) options.
I confirm the same issue on a 10.9.3 system (upgraded from clean 10.8 install), iTunes 11.2.2, MacBook 13" Aluminium, late 2008. Also checked my girlfriend's Win7 notebook: missing language/subtitle prefs even there. Seems to be a casual thing.
