Random shutdown issue

Tonight my mid-2010 Macbook (10.8.5) started to spontaneously shut down without warning. It's done this four times now. It doesn't matter if it is plugged in or not. I have tried to perform an SMC reset and this has had no effect. The battery was replaced in the summer. When I restart the computer, all the programs have been force-quitted or crashed. The Macbook doesn't display a grey screen or loading wheel or message prior to shutdown, it just turns itself off as fast as it would if you were holding the power button down. No messages come up after starting it up again.

What's the issue here and how do I fix it?

Nope - you're looking in the right place, but you've not had any kernel panics. That's a good thing. Now let's take a look at what you have running and see if there may be any third-party extensions that may be causing your problems and crashes.

Download, unzip and run EtreCheck - when it's finished running (may take awhile) copy the text (there's a button to do just that) and paste the information into a reply here. We're going to look at software first beofre deciding that you've a hardware problem.]

Wow - pretty clean system, small amount of your hard drive used, and Time Machine backups going back to 2010! That's great. I really don't see too much that could be causing problems. Are you still using the Wacom tablet? Is the software for it up to date? You can also uninstall Perian as it's not supported any longer and may cause some problems.

If you'll check on those two items - making sure that your Wacom software is up to date and completely deleting Perian - and you're still having crashes, I would suspect some sort of hardware fault. If you take the machine to an Apple Store the first thing that they will suggest is a 'fresh' installation of Mountain Lion, so you may as well boot into your Recovery partition (holding down the command and R keys whilst booting) and then electing to reinstall the OS. None of your data will be touched - it's just a fresh system installation - but it's good that you have backups, anyway.

So three things, now. Check on the Wacom software, delete all vestiges of Perian and re-install Mountain Lion. If the crashes persist, it will likely be hardware fault and you'll have to visit your local Apple store or an AASP.

Good luck,

Clinton
