How does one perform an apple hardware test on a Mac Pro early 2008

USB ports are not working except one on the front of CPU. All have worked previously with all the same externals. Seems to be a short in connectivity. I'd like to run a hardware test, but cannot figure out how to do that. Tried restart and shutting down w the "D" key depressed, grey screen for a minute but no test comes up. Tried to go to Utilities, and hardware test no available. Ran disk utilities, but doesn't pertain...as this is clearly a hardware issue. Thoughts?

Recovery gets you to Disk Utility to repair disk drive directory and permissions, that is not "Apple Hardware Test" of the machine motherboard, daughter card, memory slots etc.

Might one to make sure everything is backed up to t he point you can restore the system from a good known image or point in time, or cloned image, and taht you have an alternate boot drive available.
