contacts are gone

I was using my phone as usual. Then a friend sent me a text message and the phone number showed up. Puzzled about who this could be, I went to check my contacts and all my text messages showed phone numbers only, no names. Then I checked my contacts and my phoen said no contactes. Help!!!
