I would recommend doing one of two things:

1) As Gail suggested, go to Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone, and turn it on. If you are going to do this, you should also go to Settings > General > Restrictions on your child's phone, and select "Don't allow changes to accounts." This will ensure your child does not enable other iCloud functions, which would cause your data to appear on each other's devices.

2) This is a better solution, in my opinion, since it does not involve sharing an Apple ID. If your child has their own Apple ID (you can create one at http://appleid.apple.com), you can download the Find my Friends app and add them on there. There is also a setting in the Restrictions menu to prevent Find my Friends from being turned off. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/find-my-friends/id466122094?mt=8

You don't actually add the device. You sign in using the AppleID and password for the account of the phone you wish to locate.

You want to download the free Find my Friends Application from the App store, install it to both phones, then add the phone as a friend.

I don't think the OP was trying to locate a device. Just wanted to know how to add their child's iPhone to their device list....

The device must have the same iCloud account signed on to it. Then you just go into Settings>iCloud and turn Find My iPhone to = On.

Well, to locate a device using the Find My iPhone app, simply launch the app and log in using the Apple ID & Password for the device you are trying to locate. It doesn't matter if you personally use the same Apple ID on your own device.
