Apr 26, 2014 9:10 AM in response to iah1by Thunder83,Finally, I think I solved the issue. Finger crossed.
Please note, I always used HDD via fw800 and (dunno why) Smartware never mounted on iMac startup but only after a freeze.
What I did:
- I installed last december 2013 fw update for my MyBook via USB (I had an old fw)
- Then, after installation, I noticed smartware cd wasn't hidden (with fw800 was hidden)
- I downloaded the app from WD website to prevent Smartware image always mounting on startup
- The app, actually, asked me if I would like to prevent mounting and I accepted
- Turned off MyBook, changed usb with fw800 and stopped iMac
- On next startups, no more 'the disk inserted...' message appearing
So, I think the problem is related to that damned image always mounting.
Please, try, and lemme know! Sorry for my english, I'm italian... I know my english isn't perfect......

Apr 27, 2014 11:26 AM in response to Thunder83by paulhpha,I tried this approach and installed the updated FW for WD My Book Studio for Mac downloaded yesterday.
When I rebooted with USB connection no error message. When I switched to FireWire 800 after shutdown and rebooted the error message is back.
What app did you install to prevent "smartware" from mounting?
Where did you find it?
Thank you

Apr 27, 2014 11:47 AM in response to iah1by Thunder83,It's important after fw update to install the app provided by WD in support area of their website. Without the app I mentioned before the error message still appears. The app is Virtual CD Manager.

Apr 27, 2014 12:19 PM in response to Thunder83by paulhpha,Ecco La, Bravo!!!!
First updated Firm Ware via USB for my model selected on WD support Download Page.
Rebooted, no error message.
Downloaded and installed Virtual CD (VCD) Manager for Mac and selected disable VCD during install.
Unplugged USB, Power Cycled Drive, Plugged back in and Rebooted, no error message.
Shut down, unplugged drive, replaced USB with Firewire 800.
Powered up and booted up, no error message!
Thank you very much, that was so annoying.

Apr 28, 2014 12:40 PM in response to paulhphaby stevefromblandford forum,Well, none of that worked for me. Just spent an hour of my life downloading files and having more error or "Disk not found" messages. Waste of space. I'm ditiching the whole thing and will just write everything down on post-its.
Sorry guys, but this is not intutive nor user-friendly. I wish I'd stuck with the abacus.

This is what I get:
Drive connected and a helpful "No drive found" message after the scan. This is annoying.

May 10, 2014 1:12 AM in response to Thunder83by FelixKC,I found that connect to usb and unmount the Virtual CD, than shutdown the system. Reconnect to fw800, Bootup the system. the message go away.
I try reconnect to usb and shutdown the system without unmount the Virtual CD, the message came back.
So I unmount the Virtual CD, use the smartware to disable the Virtual CD.
I found that "unmount the Virtual CD before shutdown" is important.

Jun 3, 2014 6:05 PM in response to iah1by Burton_P,I found that all I needed to do to resolve the problem was to install this WD update: http://wdc.com/wdproducts/wdsmartwareupdate/wdsmartware.asp?id=wdfGeneric&os=mac
Rebooted, and the message did not reappear. Turned system off and then back on. Still good. I then uninstalled the WD software to test if the problem would return. It did not.
So far all is good.
FYI, I'm running OS X 10.9.3 on an early 2009 iMac.

Jun 27, 2014 2:58 PM in response to iah1by bMacII,I started getting this message after having to do a wipe and re-install the OS. My WD back up drive mounts same as always but my CF cards bring this error up through my Lexar card reader. The files show up with the card in the camera and camera plugged in. Of course this is not the most functional way to transfer files so I'd like to fix the issue.
Anyone?

Feb 19, 2015 11:11 AM in response to iah1by someotherandomguy,If the options listed above does not work for you, try opening your mac, unplug the hard drive. Plug it back in, and try erasing it again. Although this is a last resort option, it worked in my situation twice. good luck And don't forget to back up as always!

Nov 30, 2015 2:17 PM in response to bMacIIby mbudoloski,I had the same problem with 2.5 TB of music and film editing about to be lost. I freaked out for a while and then I did this...
-disk utility(make sure HD is not plugged into mac)
-plug in HD
-verify disk
-repair disk
-boom fixed
I think the reason for the problem is that I had daisy chained the HD to another external HD which was plugged into my Imac which was running yosemite(worst thing I ever did) and somehow that combination tripped a switch but all good now (fingers crossed)
