Error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" AND OS X 10.9.2

I started getting the error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." immediately after updating to OS X 10.9.2. Now occurs everytime at boot up or reboot. Anyone else having this issue? Anyway to easily resolve? It is not clear what drive the message is referring to as all drives appear to be functional when I select them

I also get "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" on boot or re-boot. This started this past week after the latest osx 10.9.2 update. For me it is associated with my WD Mybook Studio for Mac external hard drive (automatic backup with time capsule), even though the drive seems to be working and backing up just fine.

- I have tried disabling the drive and rebooting and the message does not appear. It reappears when the drive is active.

-Tried all the options in disk utility for verify and repair, no improvement.

-I uninstalled all of the WD software (smartware, quick access?, etc) and restarted, no improvement. (It seems the disk works fine without these.)

Not sure what to try next.....any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yep - me too. Checked all disks. WD somethingorother (My Book? which takes my TimeMachine "backups") is the only attached drive which Disk Utility says is in tip-top order. Still gives me the "The disk you inserted..." baloney, so I'm up a creek with the proverbial and no help at all from anybody. Only happened after I downloaded the 10.9.2 update... 😟 Sorry not to be of any help, it's justa matter of solidarity in the face of, errrrr

Hey ho, I could have been doing something useful for the past few hours.

Dear Apple, please can you fix it so that my computer works properly.

Kind regards,

The hint about WD drives was helpful for me. I believe the issue is the WD SmartWare partition - for some reason it doesn't want to mount properly after boot on 10.9.2. I tested first unplugging my WD drive and doing a reboot, did not get the error message. I then plugged in the drive and the WD SmartWare partition appeared and no error happened. So one solution is to plug in your drive after reboot.

Presumably WD will fix this with a SmartWare updated but in the meantime, you may be able to use the tool they provide to stop mounting the SmartWare partition - Virtual CD (VCD) Manager for Mac.

Important Caveat - the VCD download will suggest you first upgrade the firmware on your drive. I decided to do that. In the process, I somehow blew away my drive. I'm not sure if the firmware updater or another problem: In attempting to deal with the drive, plugging and unplugging the power, I managed to zap the enclosure circuits. I pulled the drive out, put it into another enclosure, and my partitions were gone. For better or worse, this was my backup drive so I have re-partitioned the drive and am running some extended tests before I decided to continue using this.

So, you can try using VCD to keep the SmartWare partition from mounting with the drive but you might see if you can use it without updating your firmware...

Same as most people here. Started getting "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" after the 10.9.2 upgrade. The WD disk is only used by Time Machine .... it's been sitting in the background for a couple of years.

All of a sudden we get this most annoying message !!!

Over to you Apple ...... please fix

I'm still yet having the issue too........

When i start the imac if i have the icon of "WD SmartWare" in desktop everything is ok...when is not in my desktop show to me this message again:

"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and press Ignore or Eject, everything i press the next day when open imac again is the same story....

Please, let me know too

Finally, I think I solved the issue. Finger crossed.

Please note, I always used HDD via fw800 and (dunno why) Smartware never mounted on iMac startup but only after a freeze.

What I did:

- I installed last december 2013 fw update for my MyBook via USB (I had an old fw)

- Then, after installation, I noticed smartware cd wasn't hidden (with fw800 was hidden)

- I downloaded the app from WD website to prevent Smartware image always mounting on startup

- The app, actually, asked me if I would like to prevent mounting and I accepted

- Turned off MyBook, changed usb with fw800 and stopped iMac

- On next startups, no more 'the disk inserted...' message appearing

So, I think the problem is related to that damned image always mounting.

Please, try, and lemme know! Sorry for my english, I'm italian... I know my english isn't perfect......
