Q: iMac freezes after 10.9.2 update

Hello,

After the update to 10.9.2 suddenly the screen froze. I could still move the mouse cursor but the system was stuck so I forced a reboot. Now the iMac freezes while booting. The flipping wheel beneath the apple logo just stops and nothing happens. What can I do to work with my Mac again?

it is weird, i think something wrong with the graphic drivers.

i had use the build-in diagnostics tools of my mechines, there are no hardware problem.

there are many dots (wierd pixels) when i preview the pictures but the picture is fine in Paralles Desktop (win7).

I found 2 or 3dots when the cursor over the dock.

    Please help!

    @kwangkian,

I'm sorry to hear that this did not help in your situation.

I have noticed my Finder has to be restarted whenever I try to rename a file on the desktop.

    Definitely issues in 10.9.2 still!

2010 21" iMac, right after installing 10.9.2 ocasionally won't wake up after sleep. It's on (you can notice heat,  and mouse light is on) but the screen remains black adn it won't answer to mouse or keyboard. Needs a long power button press to restart.

Trying the combo update did not work for me. I even reinstalled and restored to no avail. Also did PRAM, repair persmissions etc. Issue still there. Once a day it WILL freeze.

I've used Time Machine to restore to a 10.9.1 backup. No freezes at all. Seems to be the only REAL solution at the moment.

I'm very happy to report that the freezing issue I reported last month has gone away in my case. The only change I made was to repair permissions on the startup disk, so maybe this fixed it. I have had no freezes in March.

After zapping PRAM and isntalling combo updater, saw soem improvement, but is now regressing again. Same pattern. Mouse stops moving. Apps start crashing. Hard re-start is only way to get it going again.  Once again happening 4-5 times a day. Infuriating.

    Same here after installing 10.9.2

    MacPro5,1 from 2010

Everyday it will not wake up from sleep. Fans running, lights on, but blank screen. Nothing to do than keeping button pressed for 5 seconds to restart.

So, I started to notice that for me, the first domino to fall in a system-wide meltdown is Chrome "waiting for cache." Once that happens, apps start freezing, refusing to force quit and you have to hard-restart. I just deleted the Chrome files and images cache.  Let's see if that has any effect. Anyone else noticed that trigger?

I had this problem where I could move my cursor around the screen, but nothing clicked open. I lugged my 27 inch iMac and outboards into the Apple shop where the problem was diagnosed as my Trackpad - which I could have fitted into my pocket! All well for a few days, but now Logic is freezing a

nd I can't do any work. Going crazy!

I had the same problem after troubleshooting endless attempts the solution for me was to reinstall Maverick, after the hour it took to reinstall 10.9, 10.9.2 was installed and working fine.  Also in my App store is showed my countless attempts to install the update which it didn't before the reinstall of the platform.  My computer restarts and shuts down fine as it did before the update.

I've had the same problem as Paulmarkphillips as well.  oftentimes, my system will "crash" or screen cuts to black and system restarts.  Before this happens though, i hear the fan cut out, and everything freezes for a moment - then it shuts down/restarts.

At first i thought it was a Chrome issue as well, like many people seem to be having. But i've since deleted Chrome about a month ago and still have had the same issue. I was having Issues with Safari before this. when i originally installed the update, they seem to have disappeared only to (seemingly) cause the crashes again.

Other misc apps will subsequently crash and send error reports as well, right before a system crash.  i'd already installed the combo update weeks ago. my crashes went up from 2 times a day to about 6 times a day since.

Today I spent about four hours cleaning up, backing up and then reinstalling Mavericks.

Result is, nothing's changed, except now playback in Logic sounds like an old cracked piece of vinyl.

Plus, when I change songs in Logic or iTunes, I have to disconnect my Apogee Duet and reconnect it, despite the fact that it is recognised at Startup.

I have a piece of music to deliver on Friday, and look like I'm going to miss my deadline.....

FWIW, since cleearing my Chrome "Cached images and files" 3 days ago, I've only beachballed once vs. 4 or 5 times a day before. Know that users of browsers other than Chrome are having problems too, might be worth clearing their caches too.

I have been having the same problems as well but on my Macbook pro 2011. I decided to update to 10.9.2 because my itunes was not opening and the first thing I do when something is not working right is update. Once my computer restarted and finished updating, my screen froze and had multiple vertical lines

Luckily I backed up my computer 5 days ago so I have a back up from 10.9.1 still.
I decided to boot straight from safe mode there.
I got into safe mode after 2-3 tries and got into disk utility.
I verified the permissions and got these warnings (see attached screenshots)

I repaired from disk utility after that and nothing else really changed in the resulsts.

Restarted my computer afterward and it booted up fine and my itunes works. But Im still afraid it will crash again.

If the "delete the cache" fix works at all, it's not for long.  Back to crashing 4-5 times a day.  10.9.2 is WORST. MAINTENANCE RELEASE. EVER.

On the bright side, one of my Mail plug-ins just updated for 10.9.3 compatibility, so hopefully a fix is coming.
