Can't connect 10.6 Server to internet

Hello.

I'm trying to upgrade someone's 10.6 Server to OS X server, but I can't connect the server to the internet by ethernet or airport. I created new, automatic locations, but still can't connect. It says self-assigned IP.

I haven't worked with servers much and my networking abilities are rather limited. Is there anyone who could help me out? I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you

What you're describing sounds odd? Any server should have a fixed IP address and the fact you've found it has a self-assigned IP address does make me think that (a) something's not quite right somewhere with this server (eg: someone's been fiddling with its network settings) or (b) whatever you're using as your DHCP Server is configured to require the MAC address of networked nodes before it hands out an IP addresses and (c) the remote possibility that both the on-board Ethernet and Airport NICs have failed.

It would help if you gave us some idea of what your network consists of. This could be as simple as a Router/Firewall given to you by your ISP all the way up to an Enterprise network organised into subnets involving multiple servers.

The network preferences is probably configured to ask for an IP (DHCP). You should configure this computer with a fixed IP in the same network that the Internet router (box) is. Exactly as you would do for a regular computer with fixed IP.

An other reason could be the firewal protection. The FW service must be active, in the parameters, Services tab, you should check allow all traffic. You also probably need to activate the Nat service.
