FireVault

I started FireVault, than stopped the process. Now when I try to redo it, I am told, (1st line) FireVault Failed - (2nd line) The target Core Storage volume is already encrypted. I know it did not have time to encrypt much as it only ran for a few minutes. How do I reset and/or fix this?

dofromon,

looking at your diskutil list output, your disk0s2 partition type is not correct; it should be Apple_CoreStorage, but has remained Apple_HFS (probably due to the interruption of the conversion process). If you are able to access the data on your internal disk, I would recommend backing up that data, then erasing your internal disk and doing a clean reïnstallation of OS X, running Software Update to bring it up-to-date, and then restoring from your backup.

Melophage,

Do you think this would have anything to do with another problem i am having? While waiting for an answer here I ran Disk Utility with the repair disk option, then was treated to 121 pages (after copy and paste to Pages) of error messages.

This drive is brand new! If someone is not supposed to cancel firevault during the process why do they allow and give the customer the option?!!! Sorry about the quick rant, it was not directed at you. I appreciate your help thus far.

dofromon,

I don’t know if Disk Utility tries to repair partition types or not. My guess would be that it takes a partition type as a basis from which to determine which types of disk repair are valid for a given partition; but again, that’s only a guess.

The age of the drive has nothing to do with the ability or inability to interrupt a FileVault conversion.

If the point at which you interrupted it caused this neither-fish-nor-fowl situation, then it’s simply a programming bug; either the interruption should not have been allowed, or it should have been accepted but its effect delayed until it reached a valid “undo” point in its processing. “Bulletproof” programming is a challenging task, and in my view, cost-benefit analyses often result in “edge cases” (such as “how likely is it that someone would interrupt their FileVault conversion within X seconds of beginning it?”) getting short shrift during programming and QA, thankfully with some notable exceptions (power plant control software, aeronautics, medical devices, &c.).

Melophage,

Sorry, it has been awhile but I had an upcoming appointment with the genius bar since our last conversaion. It was to do with the 121 pages so I figured I would see what they said about this firevault issue also. Something wierd happened though. When at the genius bar I tried to show them how firevault did not work and it made a liar of me by working. It is doing an encrypted job as I type this. Would you mind when it is done if I submit a diskutil list for you to look at? I am curious if that was fixed also, since I forgot to mention the disk partion problem you pointed out. It would be wierd for it to have fixed it's self but no more so than firevault working and it could be the reason firevault worked. Hope you are still willing to follow this and have a great day!

Befuddled,

dofromon

Melophage,

Thanks for sticking it out. Here is the diskutil list &c. Again, I redacted the personal info, well my name from the document, not to say there isn't other personal info here but I really don't know. Thanks again and I hope you have a great day! - dofromon

dofromon,

your diskutil output looks perfectly fine now — the disk0s2 partition type is now Apple_CoreStorage, as it ought to be in a FileVault structure. Presuming that your external USB HDD is a Toshiba, it’s showing up as it ought to also. Now that your disk problem has been sorted out, be sure to make regular backups, so any future disk problem can be easily sorted out by a simple restoration of the most recent backup.
