Q: Video >>> FCE >>> iDVD Help

HI all,

I have taken over a project for my in-laws to put their family videos onto DVD from MiniDV. I am no video expert and would appreciate your help.

My FIL has put the MiniDV onto digital format (720 x 576, DVC - PAL, Linear PCM, PAL (5-1-6). I hope this is a suitable format as there are over 260 hours of footage.

I have FCE 4.0.5. > what are the best easy setup settings to be able to import and then simply add titles to the videos and export using a contained Quictime video before importing back into iDVD 7.1.2.

The family videos are not HD quality but would like to have the titles as crisp as possible!!

Thanks for your help.

Guy

Your settings should match your material - DV/PAL.

Add your titles using the built in titler and export the material in the same format (ie do not convert it)

Open up iDVD, pull in the material and let iDVD encode and burn the disc.

More specifically, given the specs you quoted for your video clips, select the DV-PAL Easy Setup in Final Cut Express, then create a new Sequence, then import your clips.

Regarding titles, you will get the clearest/most crisp lettering if you use a sans-serif font in the largest size you find acceptable.   Also, any time you use a text generator where the text moves (eg. title crawl, etc) you will get jagged, wiggly edges.  This is almost inescapable in DV video.   Stick with still titles.

Regarding exporting from FCE, there is no need to export to self-contained QT files.  If iDVD is on the same Mac as FCE, you can safely export as "non self-contained QT movie."  You will find the export times are much shorter and the resuting files take up far less disk space than self-contained QT movies.  There is NO difference in video quality and you can import them into iDVD exactly the same as a self-contained QT file.
