Your plan is feasible. Through Thunderbolt is is possible to share your MBA display on the screen of the iMac. Network and peripheral connections would still be better made to your MBA unless you go through a docking station

Mar 1, 2014 9:05 AM in response to atlrx07by themachead,That's how a docking station works, what it does yes...but the docking station gets connected to the MBA, from it you can connect to LAN (Local area network) other peripherals including your iMac. For extended desktop alone direct to iMac with no dock see this article.
