my iphone just wont update anything- the memory is not full
It doesnt even appear to be helping when connected to wifi- infact wifi is slowing it down

unable to check for updates- an error occured while checking for a software update
cancel or try again- it keps doing this
on apps- just get the downloading then it all goes back to needs updating
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If the issue persists, basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
