Q: what's the best thing i could do with my 24-inch, Late 2006 iMac?  was wondering about using it as an external monitor (for a new PC), but that seems to require some electronics!

Updated the OS to Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, but finding it a little sluggish, so thinking to buy a new 27" iMac, but then that would mean i've nothing to do with my current 24" iMac!

Ideally, would simply buy a new PC which could then plug-into the iMac 24" to use its screen as an external monitor - have read on the internet that this is only possible via opening the Mac up and repurposing it via electronics!

Your Late 2006 24" does not support video input, so you can not use it as a plug in monitor for another computer.

I have a 2006 iMac that the grandkids still use, I think that your best bet is to sell or pass the 24" on to family and buy a new iMac or Mac Mini.
