Q: Home Sharing on Apple TV keeps disconnecting

My apple tv just recently stopped recognizing that my home sharing is turned on.  I can watch a full movie from my iTunes, but when it finishes, it goes to the home menu and when i go to the Computer app, it says to turn on Home Sharing.  Home Sharing is turned "ON" on my itunes on my computer, so i'm not sure why Apple TV doesn't recognize it, even when it clearly recoginized it as turned on 2 hours prior.

This started happening after i updated the Mavericks OS to the version 10.9.2 and itunes to version 11.1.5.  The only fix i have is to turn "off" home sharing in iTunes then to turn it back "on."  This seems to fix it in the meantime, but after another movie, it happens all over again.

Does anyone else have this issue?  It's pretty annoying to have to keep turning off then back on Home Sharing on my itunes.

Apple TV (3rd generation), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), iTunes (11.1.5)

I've not noticed dropouts in films so far but I've only really watched tv episodes since it happened. However I've had to turn off home sharing and back on again before I can watch anything each 'session'.

Definitely not the computer sleeping. It's definitely only started happening after the OSX and iOS updates.

Seems after a bit of research, we are not alone with this problem!

There is also a suggestion it's happening more after the latest Mavericks and iTunes updates?

I've only owned a mac for 4 weeks is it's all I've known, but can't believe it can go unresolved, the kit simply doesn't work as described!

    Very frustrating!

I think that the problem may be that the Mac that's hosting the iTunes library is sleeping the network, even if you have disabled sleep.  In other words, I think there might be a bug in Mac OS X causing the Mac to shut down wifi (and perhaps all networking) after a period of inactivity, even if you disabled sleep in Energy Saving settings.

The problem became worse for me in the last days, then I related it to the the 10.10.3 update. I recalled that each Mac OS X update brings back an issue where my external (USB) Hard Drive shuts down even if "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" is enabled in Energy Saving preference pane.  To fix this, I have to run a script, then it's good until next Mac OS X update.

The script basically enables a cron to run every 60 seconds to keep the drive spinning.

My guess is that that a side effect of that script running is that it is also keeping my Mac OS X from sleeping other things like the network and therefore helping me to avoid the iTunes - Apple TV disconnect that you are experiencing.

I just ran the script again and will see if that fixes things for me.

Reporting back.  After I re-enabled the script to keep my external drive spinning (runs every 60 seconds), my itunes library home sharing has not disconnected from my apple tv.  I think that there's a bug in Energy Saving preferences that is shutting down networking even if you set the computer to never sleep.  My library is not in the external drive, but it seems that the script has the (good) side effect of keeping my computer awake, including networking.

    hi there,

i am using homesharing and apple tv's for quite a while and i expirienced this problem allready a few times after upgrades. Right after the upgrades

it is driving me nuts. I spent so much time with apple-support and in the different forums. A while after the upgrades it is allways beeing quitly fixed

nobody knows why and how. So i am swithcing off and on homesharing several times a day ... due to randomly one of the 5 appletv's can not get connected

.... verry frustrating. I like this idea with the script. and i do not bother ra call in again at apple-support. i am wondering if you could provide this script to give it a try ? Thanks a lot for your help and for your feedback in advance. Regards dimik
