Just bought the MacBook Pro, Thunderbolt screen, keyboard, and mouse for my husband. He is having a panic attack (he's an engineer) because the Thunderbolt screen will not function with the MacBook closed (clamshell). Help me please!
Should add what occurs exactly:
1. Clamshell macbook
2. Thunderbolt screen goes black
3. tap mouse
4. Thunderbolt screen comes up
5. A few seconds later, the Thunderbolt screen goes black again nothing will bring it back up.
would help if you stated exactly which portable Mac. And which OSX system.

go here http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macbookproand look for efi and smc updaters and apply them. This is normal stuff.

Also update the OS to 10.9.2 through Software Update.
Also if the screen goes dark open the lid, disconnect the TB display and then reconnect it.
Mac's aren't the best at doing dual displays and or external monitors. Apple still can't figure it out.
