Q: Process of Merging 2 Libraries never ends

New to Aperture- upgraded from iPhoto. I ran into a disaster with an iPhoto DB that grew out of control. I broke it down into year-by-year pieces in Aperture and "cleaned" the duplicates manually.

I now have started to merge everythibg back together. I reached a point with the newly combined Aperture Library (~40GB) where every time I tried to Merge in another (~20GB) Library Aperture crashed.

So, as a work-around I started to combine the remaining Libraries into a second large Library which has been working OK- I've reached about 45GB on the second combine Librbary and thought I'd Rebuild the first combined library then Merge it with the second combined Library.

The merge has been running overnight, more than 14 hours now- I don't see any change in CPU time or Bytes Read/Written in Activity Monitor in the past 2 hours I have been watching so I am forced to Force Quit Aperture.

So I am trying to merge Stefan's iPhoto Library >2009 (Kind=Aperture Library, Size=46.24 GB) into Stefan's iPhoto Library 2010> (Kind=Photo Library, Size=90.46 GB) ... noticed the difference in the Kinds there - the librbary I was trying to Merge into has obviously growth considerably as the Merge has done a lot of work before becoming stalled/stuck/hung .... not sure exactly what the terminology is here for this situation.

Wondering if I should create a new Aperture Library and Merge Stefan's iPhoto Library 2010> into that, then try again?

I have now Force Quit Aperture, after taking a Spindump, a Sample, and a screenshot of the process summery in Activity Monitor. Have saved those off.

At a loss what to do. Any help much appreciated. HELP?

Here's a TOP  .... highlighted Aperture

Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries

I now have started to merge everythibg back together. I reached a point with the newly combined Aperture Library (~40GB) where every time I tried to Merge in another (~20GB) Library Aperture crashed.

Just be sure - did Aperture really crash, or just hang and make no apparent progress? Merging libraries may take hours, so don't force quit, just because the progress bar is not moving.  And ensure, yu are merging on a drive with plenty of free space. During merging the size may increase considerably temporarily, sometimes double.

Have you checked, if the format of the drive is correct? MacOS Extended (Journaled)? On drive with the wrong format it is not safe.

After force quitting the libraies do need repairing anyway, so I suggest to use the Library First aid Tools on all libraries being merged, before trying to merge again.

See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library

Make sure, you have a backup of all libraries in question, before trying a rebuild.

Wondering if I should create a new Aperture Library and Merge Stefan's iPhoto Library 2010> into that, then try again?

If the First Aid Tools do not solve this, do just that - rebuild all libraries by importing into a new library.
