    Mar14Apple,

if you already have a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI or Mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, have you just connected the adapter between your MacBook Air’s Thunderbolt port and your monitor’s HDMI or DVI port (as appropriate), to see if it works without additional software or drivers?

Yes, I have connected my mini display port to the monitors VGA adaptor and can see  google chrome on my monitor, however  the trackpad doesn't work, no mouse pointer and so I don't know whether this is a matter of getting a Magic Mouse or of a software or driver issue. Thanks for your reply and help!

    Mar14Apple,

which resolution are you using when you use your monitor? Is that resolution supported through the monitor’s VGA port? (You’d probably have better throughput by using an adapter for the HDMI port or DVI port instead.) When you say that the trackpad doesn’t work, does that mean that the cursor is not visible on the monitor, or that it physically does not work, such that clicks are not registered, &c.?

Sorry, took me a while. The resolution is 1920x1080, and actually I can now see my mouse and type something visible on the monitor. However, what I see on my MBA and on the monitor is different. Would you know how to get the two displays in sync? Many thanks.

    Mar14Apple,

if you would like to have the two displays synchronized, then you will need to pick a resolution that both your MacBook Air’s display and your monitor support. I don’t have a Mid 2013 MacBook Air, so I don’t know which resolutions it supports, but its maximum resolution is 1440 × 900. Does your monitor also support that resolution?
