Why doesn’t Time Machine work for backup after restore?

Due to a Bluetooth problem, I used Recovery Mode to erase the boot drive and restore from my Time Machine drive. Having successfully done so, back-up to the same drive won't work. Time Machine claims there isn't enough room on the drive to back up. Why? if that's how it is designed it's a good reason to switch to clone software, like SuperDuper.
