Changing OS for my Palm TX

I've been using my Palm TX with my PC for a number of months. Now, I'm thinking about getting rid of my PC (finally) and using the Palm with my Mac.

If I do this, will I be erasing all the data in my Palm when I sync it with the Mac?

And if I want to, can I sync with the Mac and PC? I have a PC at work and I may need to use BOTH OS's with my Palm.

Any help will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I think that you should at least explore this alternative approach:

• synchronize your Palm T|X with the Palm Desktop for Mac OS X using the conduit setting Handheld overwrites Macintosh, thus transferring an intact set of records from your handheld to your Macintosh

• use the Export option of the Palm Desktop to create a vCard file of contacts for later import into the Address Book, and to create a vCal file of events (note that tasks are not exportable in this manner)

• import your vCard file into the Address Book and your vCal file into iCal

• enable synchronization of your Palm device using iSync to interact with the Address Book and iCal

• move from this synchronization option to the Missing Sync for Palm OS, which is a vastly better program than either the Palm Desktop or iSync

More information about the Missing Sync for Palm OS is available here:

It is possible to synchronize with both a PC and a Macintosh, though not generally recommended, as the results can be unpredictable.

A vCard file is a standard for exchanging contacts, and a vCal file is a standard for exchanging calendars. The Mac OS X version of the Palm Desktop supports both. The Address Book can import vCard files, and iCal can import vCal files.

I'm not trying to poke you in the eye here, but when you ask, "…what is a conduit?" my reaction is that you have a lot of reading to do! If you don't know what a conduit is at this point, then you're going to run into severe and insurmountable problems with enabling synchronization.

I would start with documentation for the Palm Desktop, likely bundled for Mac OS X on the install CD-ROM provided in the package with your handheld organizer. Read that thoroughly and be sure that you understand it before you install the Palm Desktop and attempt to configure it and synchronize with it.

And be sure that if you decide to use either iSync or the Missing Sync for Palm OS that you thoroughly read and understand the documentation available for them, as the documentation for the Palm Desktop—and the synchronization technology it describes—have very little to do with either of these applications. iSync and the Missing Sync for Palm OS are very different applications, and little of what is described for iSync is applicable to the Missing Sync.

There is nothing 'plug and play' about the Sync Services framework. It is a complex construct, and you can easily and irreversibly damage or destroy your data records if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

Thanks for the advice.

The truth is, I'm actually more familiar with Mac OS and their termiology. I've never had a Palm before and this is the first time I'm planning to use it.

My wife uses a Palm but with Windows OS. So, she will have some knowledge about it.

Don't worry. I'll read as much as I can about this.

And yes, you did poke me in the eye...and it hurts 🙂
