What exactly do you mean your music is "stored in the cloud?" Have you subscribed to iTunes Match?
Yes, I've subscribed to iTunes Match. Am I wrong in thinking that I should be able to play my music from iTunes Match on my iPad using a wifi connection? That was the whole point of putting my music in the cloud -- so that I could draw it down and play it when I needed it. BTW, thanks so much for helping me with this.
On the iPad go to Settings > iTunes and Apps Store and set "iTunes Match" to ON (green). Open the Music app and let it download the music DB from the cloud. Then you can listen to the music.
But that's what I don't want to do. I think I must have misunderstood what was possible with iTunes Match and the cloud. I had thought I would be able to play my music directly from the cloud using WiFi. I didn't think I would have to download it from the cloud to play it on my iPad. I store it in the cloud because I don't have enough storage space on my iPad -- I can't download all my music because I run out of storage space. If iTunes Match doesn't allow you to play the music FROM THE CLOUD, but instead only allows you to DOWNLOAD IT FROM THE CLOUD TO YOUR IPAD TO PLAY, then it's not serving the purpose I thought it would. What's the point of storing it in the cloud if you have to download it to play it?
The only way I could imagine it working for me is if it possible to only download particular albums or songs. Or does your whole library have to be downloaded?
You don't have to download the music to play it.
On an iOS device, when you stream a track from the cloud, a copy of the track is downloaded at the same time to a temporary cache on the device. This cache is managed by the Music app so that when space is needed older tracks are deleted from the cache. This is how the service works and cannot be changed.
If you only want certain albums or songs stored in permanent storage on the device then download those.
So, if I just want to play an album by say, Beck, for example, how do I do that?
When you say "let it download the DB from the cloud" doesn't that mean it will download ALL of my music?
How do I download selected music?
Sorry if I seem extraordinarily dense.
How did you play the music before you enabled iTunes Match? You play it the same way with iTunes Match. Find the album you want to play and either tap the song you want to play, shuffle the entire album, or tap the first song to play the entire album.
