Was the iPhone officially unlocked prior to installing the update - not jailbroken/hacked to be unlocked?

i have the same problem ... will i be able to unlock it if it was updated without unlocking ?

You need to contact the carrier the iPhone is locked to and ask them if they can unlock it. If the unlock is then approved you can follow the steps in the article below to complete the unlock:
