Syncing an iPod - Loop

While syncing my iPod 4 to my MBA, the MBA went into a loop with the message "cancelling sync." The MBA is now locked like this and does not respond to keystrokes. How do I unfreeze the MBA?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Solved problem myself by opening Finder, which allowed me to Force Quit iTunes & get out of the loop.
