Q: iPhone acts odd, crazy, touch screen, random behavior, while charging

This post only addresses iPhone acting up while charging and using the device.

Problem:

I have a cord and wall charger I take with me in my laptop case. It charges the iPhone fine, but... when I attempt to use the iPhone while it charges on this cord the touch sreen responds CRAZY, or RANDOM, like an invisible finger is pressing another area of the screen.

I can not consistantly or hardly OPEN the device by "slide to unlock" .... most of the time it actually ZOOMs in like the 3 Finger touch.

ONLY when I unplug the phone can I "slide to unlock"  and have normal use of phone.

Troubleshooting:

We have 5 Apple devices I tried all the Cords with all wall Plugs...

Solution:

Turns out that we some how have a Wall Plug that doesn' appear to be "Designed by Apple in CA"

All the other plugs either have an Apple Logo or state "Designed by Apple in CA"

...This one that doesn't work properly has the same model #'s and voltage written on the face, but says "Power Adapter made in China"

It Charges fine but, must have a grounding issue or something that causes the touch screen to respond Crazy & Odd.

I Marked this one with a sharpie marrker "X", we just use it to Charge as a last resort.

If you have similar issues this could be your best bet....test it yourself with another cord or wall plug.

iPod touch, Windows XP

I too am facing the "stuck in landscape" issue. I bought my golden 6 (16GB) in Dec too. I have to close the app and then restart it and everything works OK.

Also, I am facing the "ghost" issue in my phone, as if glove mode has been activated. The icons flicker sideways and whenever I click on "Cellular data" in settings, it selects "WiFi" or "Bluetooth" (options above and below cellular data").

One thing to note here is that it usually happens after I pick the phone from charging OR my screen has been shut for quite some time. The fix is easy - I close the screen, count to 5 and switch it ON again and it works fine.

The only thing I did recently is update my iOS to the apple watch one. This happens when my phone is NOT CHARGING (as I use the charger and data cable which came with the box)

Thinking of taking it to Apple care but I doubt they will know **** about it.

Using screen guard and Spigen case for my phone.

    Help would be appreciated.

I have a iphone 6 and its doing the same erratic touchscreen behaviour. Mine happens when its charging and when its not.

maybe its a software issue that apple has to figure out... i don't know.

whatever the reason is, it sure would be nice to have this fixed.

I am having this same issue, but mine tends to happen over FaceTime. I usually will set up my phone on or next to my computer and it goes haywire, ending the call, flipping the screen, and consistently muting me. Everyone who says that they are having this issue seems to be plugged into the mac, now while I do not know if this hold much water, could it be because the Mac is interfering with some technical aspect of the iPhone when it gets too close?

I plug my phone into an Apple Charger with an Apple cord, and I only seem to have this problem using my phone next to the computer.

Food for thought. Let me know if this helps, or if I'm crazy.

    Thanks

Having the same issue. Am using a 'juice' charger, which i believe is an officially recognised apple product.

Has anyone had this successfully resolved, either fixed or as a swap under warranty?

I have read the discussions on this and would like to add the following. My iPhone 6plus 64gb is acting weird on an irregular basis. Once a day it acts like a drunken sailor starting apps on its own leaving me not being able to act or do anything. I then do a hard reboot without success even not be able to enter me unlocking code. The screen is simply not accepting anything anymore. In the Whatsapp app I see people writing but that is impossible in my opinion. I am on the latest level of software 8.3. Being fed up with this I reconfigured my iPhone as a new iPhone and did not use any backup but downloaded the apps I am using the most. This is not a solution too it still happens. Who knows the solution?????

    Hi ivop,

Same here. With original Apple cable. With a brand new iPhone 5S (have to note, however, that it also happened with my old iPhone 4. I thought it was because the phone was old and didn't bother too much. Now it's a different story, as the phone is new.).

The phone does completely stupid things, as if I touched other parts of the screen.

What seems to help is (I don't want to be too affirmative, as I've just tried this tip) to revmove the cover from the phone.

    Don't ask.

    Doesn't make sense.

But now I can send messages, check my mails, etc. that was impossible so far as the phone did everything but the function I touched.

    Try it. Maybe it helps.

I have a simple silicone case.

    Éva

Has anyone thought this could be a carrier issue? I use Verizon...here is why I'm suspicious:

iPhone 6 Plus--SAME crazy stuff happening to me. Usually when charging (with genuine apple chargers, not generic), although sometimes crazy stuff happens when I'm not charging, especially the random muting of calls, Face timing my contacts, and refusing to switch back and forth from portrait to landscape mode.

Get this, THE VERY SAME THING was happening to me on my OLD iPHONE 5, also Verizon!!! I dealt with the issues for two years because the occurrences  were so random, I could never duplicate them at Apple store, much less explain them. Apple tech support over the phone was no help either--basically told me I was nuts. After awhile the battery would only hold a charge for 30 minutes, whether I used it or not. Annoying!!! Having to be tethered to the wall, but not able to use the phone while charging b/c it goes Bat sh*t crazy.

Another long, long call with Apple (5 hours of being transferred) and someone finally determined that this was a known issue and Verizon had recalled my phone. ????? Thanks for letting me know Verizon. Apple shipped me a new iPhone 5, which I sold on Craigslist and used the $$ to buy the 6 plus. Now having the same issues with the NEW phone....What the....?

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. To heck with that. I spend way too much money on Apple products for home/business for this BS to be happening.

If anyone finds a solution to this please please post it--I will do the same!

Has anyone found a solution to this?  I'm on my 2nd phone now and having the same issues.  Very frustrating, stupid time consuming, expensive traveling to an Apple store, and embarrassing explaining why my phone keeps calling my contacts.

I have AT&T today....although that might change after this experience as well has my smart phone of choice.

I tried to call AppleCare, they were closed for the night and I couldn't end the call because my screen went black.  Three hundred dollars of peer junk.

I went to the Apple Store in Amsterdam this morning and explained the problem. My iPhone 6 plus was hardly usable during the past few days acting odd, typing all kins of stuff on its own and starting apps without me being nearby. Apple installed a new screen and now the phone works okay. I am happy and hope it stays this way.

Same thing has happened to me, on and off, but the last time was so bad I could not use the phone!  I have only used Apple's chargers; and it's not the charger.  "LOCKING" the gravity sensor is the only thing that works!

Yes, I thought my phone was possessed & it was embarrassing that it sent out messages and gibberish!  The keys would type while my finger was not even close to the phone, several inches away.  It was not the cord/charger, it's Apple's cord.  No new screen; I tried "bending" the phone in case that was it.

I FINALLY found the fix:  turn off the gravity sensor by highlighting "LOCK!"  The control screen appears when you swipe upward.  Just highlight the TOP RIGHT icon, and the whole problem goes away!  Why is no-one sharing this fix and instead letting cellphone users suffer such mental distress??  "Just turn off the gravity sensor"

I have Verizon.  Besides makling  ghost keystrokes, my phone actually sent out messages while flipping around from screen to screen!  I was about to bring it back to Verizon but now I think it's all due to the gravity sensor.  I FINALLY found the fix while in line at the Verizon store - and they denied this has ever happened to any phone but meanwhile I showed the guy there are hundreds of posts on the internet saying this happened to them!

"LOCK" the gravity sensor!  Swipe upward until you see the grey control screen and then highlight (select) the top right icon.

UPDATE: After fixing the gravity sensor, my cellphone sent multiples of a message to someone.  Then I got a few bizarre keystrokes again, not as crazy as before - so I went again to the Verizon store & got more help this time.  I was told that imessage is often the problem for both issues.  From "Settings" (on iphone 4) she turned off imessage so that I'm just using data to text.  Apparently that's the real problem because now it seems to work OK even with the gravity sensor back on.
