Q: Emails are automatically being marked as 'read'

I had a mail server running on a Mac Mini under Server 3.0.2 with Mavericks 10.9.1 which was running perfectly well.

Since upgrading to OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 and OS X Server 3.0.3, any new mail is automatically being marked as read. Any mail that I mark as 'unread' automatically gets unchecked in front of my eyes after a few seconds, either using Mail app on OS X 10.9.2 or using the Mail app on iOS 7.0.6 (both iphone and ipad).

Suspect this is something to do with IMAP and Dovecot, although the mail server logs don't really show any activity at the point at which emails automatically get 'read'. Perhaps I need to increase the logging level??

Can anybody help?

Could be permissions. Make sure the folder

    /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mail

and everything inside it are owned by _dovecot:mail.

Thanks Linc, but a recursive listing of this folder shows everything owned by _dovecot:mail as you said.

mail-info.log in /Library/Logs/mail seems to show regulary user logins, which tie in with when messages are marked as read automatically. Coincidence? (user/ip_address/hash changed)

Mar 03 07:07:20 auth: Info: od[sacl check](user,ip_address,<hash>): mail SACL is enabled

Mar 03 07:07:20 auth: Info: od[sacl check](user.ip_address,<hash>): user: user is member of mail SACL

    Mar 03 07:07:20 auth: Info: od(user,ip_address,<hash>): password verification succeeded for user=user (method=CRAM-MD5)

    Mar 03 07:07:20 imap-login: Info: Login: user=<user>, method=CRAM-MD5, rip=ip_address, lip=ip_address, mpid=55722, TLS

Logging is all at 'info' level - how can I make this more verbose?

The log messages are all in the ASL database, which you can query with syslog(1). I don't think that will help.

Are you sure a client isn't doing this, maybe a Mail rule?

Uncheck "Enable invitations by email" in Calendar settings on the server.
