Is my Apple TV remote broken or just grumpy??

Please help. My Apple TV remote does not work when I press the left/right/up/down buttons. I cannot, therefore, use the Remote app on my iPhone/iPad as I cannot access the "Settings" within Apple TV. I have changed the battery in the remote. Help much appreciated!!

The menu button works and the Apple TV recognises I have pressed up/down/left/right as the light on the Apple TV flashes when I press this....
