I have a new Macbook Pro and an early 2009 iMac. I also bought an MDP to MDP cable. Unfortunately I am unable to activate the iMac work as a display for my new Macbook Pro. I press the Command + F2 keys without much success. Anything I should be doing different? Any help would be ver much appreciated.

If I'm not mistaken, that won't work with a 2009 iMac - you need both Macs to have Thunderbolt ports, I believe.
But then someone may come along and prove me wrong!

Yes you can use it. thuderbolt port is backward compatible. it will work else take a converter from thunderbolt to firewire and use display of Imac.
How, exactly, does the Firewire port on the iMac act as a video input? I know that Thunderbolt ports are compatible as mini DisplayPorts but Firewire? Do you have a link to an Apple document outlining the procedure for using a 2009 iMac as a monitor for a MacBook Pro?

What kind of 'converter'? I'm not trying to be dense - I'm just unaware of any Thunderbolt to Firewire cable that could carry video?

yes you are right i don't think so firewire is going to support vedio.....then the only option here would be thunderbolt to miniDVI.
