Wondered if you ever got an answer? The exact thing happens with my phone. At one point I couldn't confer with associate doctors because when I texted them, their numbers became blocked! I went from 184 contacts down to 30. Looked at blocked contacts list and there they were. Very annoying especially when I is my phone to conduct business!

Blocking a contact does not remove them from your Contacts. If you have contacts disappearing, you have a different problem entirely. Are you, by any chance, sharing an Apple ID with someone else?
I am having the exact same problem on my iPhone 6. I took it to the Genius Bar and they thought I was crazy. All they could recommend to me was to restore the phone to the manufacture's settings and then set it up "as new."
Yes this blocking contacts without you knowing is a problem in I-phones, but it only occurs if the I-phone has experienced "numerous problems" or its near the end of its life cycle. If you decide to get a new I-phone with the same apple account and sim this problem won't occur as this I-phone has been restored so all the contacts that were blocked will now be unblocked. If this problem does occur again then the contacts that were previously blocked without you knowing won't be blocked again as this I-phone has the same apple account and sim as the old one so it knows what contacts that were blocked before and this I-phone has been restored so the contacts that were blocked before won't now. If the same contact has been blocked again then there's 2 reasons: reason 1- you decided to block them yourself or reason 2- you are using a different apple account and sim. If you decide not to get a new a phone you can fix it by resetting your phone to factory settings or take it to an apple genies bar, but the problem may occur again very quickly as the phone is failing for the reasons stated at the beginning.
Why do you believe it it blocking people randomly?
Is Do Not Disturb possibly turned on?
It's turned off bc there is no other explaination and I have heard of this before.
What is "turned off"? The phone? The Do Not Disturb feature?
If you truly desire help, try explaining in detail what is going on. We are not mind readers.
The Do Not Disturb feature is turned off.... but it's still finding a way to block numbers.
Then the phone is not blocking numbers. Why do you believe it is?
What exactly is happening?
Yes, describe the symptoms your phone exhibits that cause you to believe it is blocking numbers.
the symptoms ARE my phone randomly restarts itself without being prompted to.
AND all the latest numbers plugged in that I have been texting or called immmediately gets BLOCKED.
There is a glitch in the IOS that needs to be remedied. I called AT&T they instructed me to back up and restore my phone. They said they had heard of this issue before. however, it kept blocking the numbers. I am the ONLY person that has access to blocking people and I do no actively block people.

yes it is the phone!
it might help to know I have been an App Developer for 2 years.
currently have several games out in the app store.
I know everything about all apple devices except for this.
This would indicate a serious OS issue.
Restore the device as new, not from backup.
This issue is real and restoring is not the answer. I have had the same happen to me except for the restart. I was in the middle of a text conversation and I failed to receive and more texts. Also noticed that every text I sent was sent as text instead of iMessage. Later that same day I opened my macbook and saw (through laptop messaging program) that there were more texts sent to me but they did not show up on my Iphone. After digging into screens on the iPhone, i located under messages, "Blocked". After opening, i found the persons contact info listed. This was not entered by me and no one else had possession of my phone. This needs to be looked into!

Then you should let Apple know. They are not reading here. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. Call AppleCare. Submit feedback using the feedback page:
