Jing You,

some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro models are known to have defects in their NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU panics, yours might be one of them. Apple had a gratis servicing program for the defect that lasted for three years from the date of purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis.

Duration: 13 minutes 38 seconds

Chris:
Thanks for contacting CPU. My name is Chris. Please give me a moment to look over your information.

Chris:
Hi Jing You. How are you today?

Jing You:
hello

Chris:
I see from the case that there is a graphics processor issue. Is that correct?

Jing You:
i had posted my problem on apple support forums

Jing You:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5958136?answerId=25048300022#25048300022&ac_cid=op123456#25048300

Jing You:
i also had attached a crash log in there

Jing You:
in reference to: https://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

Chris:
Those forums aren’t actively checked by AppleCare. Give me just a moment to take a quick look.

Chris:
I see the GPU log on your forum post. This would fall under TS4088. What we will need to do is have the computer evaluated and serviced by an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Chris:
I can look up the nearest stores and service providers to you. What is your zip code?

Jing You:
i am in singapore

Jing You:
however i do not want to pay $$

Chris:
Oh I see.

Chris:
I can look up the nearest Apple Authorized Service Providers in Singapore for you. Where are you located in Singapore?

Jing You:
I know the nearest is at wheel lock place, i had my apple stuff repaired there before

Chris:
Great!

Chris:
For this issue they will run a diagnostic on the computer before making the final decision about whether the computer qualifies for repair or not and let you know whether the computer qualifies. If it does, then you won’t have to pay for a repair.

Jing You:
thank you so much, so how do i let them know regarding this situation we had so far discussed?

Chris:
You can provide them with your case number for this issue which is 583444540. You can also reference the support article ID which is TS4088.

Chris:
I will be emailing you a transcript of our chat after it ends you can also show the Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Jing You:
what if they state that my macbook pro is way out of warranty period ?

Chris:
If the diagnostics determine the computer qualifies for repair it will be repaired even though the hardware warranty has expired.

Jing You:
okay sweet, can you please email this transcript to me so that next week or the week after next i will drop by to show it to the service personnels

Chris:
Absolutely! You will receive the transcript by email after our chat ends.

Jing You:
okay thank you good day!

Chris:
Jing You, after looking into the issue together we determined our best route is to visit an Apple Authorized Service Provider. We're confident the issue will be resolved after this step is completed. Are you okay with the resolution we’ve come to?

Jing You:
yes =)

Chris:
It's been a pleasure to help you today. When you are ready to end the chat, please click on "End Chat" at the bottom of the window. Thank you for choosing Apple and have a great day!

Yes my problem was solved, however after a long conversation with the tech and customer rep guys.

In short here is what happen:

  1. Chat with Apple support
  2. Went down for diagonistic, confirmed MBP 2010 aligns with the known issue TS4088. The apple service center was unable to order mainboard replacement as it was way out of warranty. It was returned to me.
  3. Chat & received call from Apple support, lasted an hour. Tech guy --> Supervisor ---> Another guy ---> Customer Rep. Finally Customer Rep agreed to replace my mainboard as a one time exception.
  4. Sent my MBP 2010 back to apple service center. Done!

Apr 8, 2014 12:14 PM in response to Jing You

The kernel panic indicates that your GPU has failed. This is a known issue for your machine. Your model is subject to a replacement program for the logicboard due to a defective GPU. It lasts 3 years from the date of purchase. If this is already expired, Apple may or may not still replace your logicboard. It is ultimately at the discretion of the store manager. If you don't qualify, your other option would be a flat rate repair, for ~$300, which Apple will repair anything wrong with the machine for this fee. See the user tip and support article below:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss ...

Apr 8, 2014 10:19 PM in response to Lamas_Pinheiro

According to my chat support:

//

Brian:

I do see where we were previously contacting concerning coverage on the Macbook. The Macbook is currently 1081 days outside of warranty, and beyond the 3 year coverage period for the issue noted here: Intermittent Black Screen

//

The repair fee would cost way more than $300. The logic board replacement also includes an replacment on the CPU & GPU as it is soldered onto the logic board by default.

Apr 23, 2014 9:40 AM in response to Jing You

Hello,

Its been about 2 weeks since apple service center replaced my logic board (which includes a new or refubrished cpu & gpu), my macbook pro 2010 has not crash or shown any forms of performance issues.

Furthermore, with "macs fan control", previously some mac productivity, editing apps, games & even safari flash contents, the cpu heat averages 85°C, & had shown signs of thermal throttling. Now it averages at 70°C for the same performance load, and has not shown any signs of thermal throttling!

I'm so with happy apple customer service reps for taking care of us even though it was out of warranty!

Sep 23, 2014 12:57 AM in response to Jing You

Ok I had this problem only when I loaded Maverick onto my mid 2010 2.66 laptop with 8gb of ram and 1tb ssd. I thought it was a glitch in the os at first. But after reformatting my hard drive and putting lion on it still happened. So I'm a combat wounded soldier and I go to school so I bought a new iMac. Looked and found out about the recall. I bought this macbook brand new for over 2k and after the genius bar said it would be over 500 to fix because I was a year late on the free fix, I called apple talked to their customer relations department. I had them see how many Apple devices I habe bought in the last 6 years including the new iMac and tell them I buy from them because of quality and I feel like I had one pulled over on me with this since I knew nothing of the recall. And I said I'll take back my IMAC and buy a pc from now on. They ended up fixing my laptop and thanked me for being loyal to their brand and I should have my laptop back tomorrow morning by fed ex.

I think there is a solution - I applied this today after suffering the regular OSX crash and GPU panic on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro ever since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Apple introduced Memory Compression in order to make more memory available to the apps currently in use. Switching this off seems to have the effect of speeding up older Macs that have been struggling to run memory-hungry apps since upgrading OSX version and also seems to cure the GPU panic crashes. To disable memory compression open Terminal and run this command:

sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

You will be promoted to enter your system password. No further response will be received, all you need to do is reboot and cross your fingers!

Mar 19, 2015 1:48 PM in response to Richard AH UK

I have been following this issue for about a year now, ever since I foolishly upgraded my OS from Snow Leopard. Unfortunately I do not believe that all of the information give by apple is entirely correct, and the "fixes" associated with gfxcard are a very weak band-aide.

I have found evidence that it is not a hardware problem as apple states, but a software problem. A bug introduced by upgrading from Snow Leopard. My evidence is that I have completely remove OSX from my MacBook Pro 15 in. and installed Ubuntu. I have had no such GPU panics, it can run both the intel GPU and the Nvidia GPU and NO crashes. I admit that this may not be the ideal solution as Linux is not for everyone, but neither is paying $500 + to fix it or $3500 + to replace the MacBook.

I think Apple needs to value its customers a bit more and fix their bug, otherwise they will begin to see a large portion of the academic community slowly migrate back to Linux platforms.
