If starting in safe mode does not work, what do I do?
I restarted my Imac in safe mode by holding down the shift key after the chime. But all I can see is the gray apple logo.. What should I do?

As it is safe to assume you are not running the ancient original OS 10.0, if you have any further questions please confirm what Mac this, with what version of OS X.
