It really isn't worth it. Come April 8th, all update support for XP will cost an arm and a leg from Microsoft per year.
You can update your RAM, and make sure you have enough hard disk space, but buying a used MacBook would be better use of your time:
If your VPC 7 did not have Win XP Home Edition pre installed, you must install it separately. Some VPC 7 versions only supported XP Home Edition. It may be cheaper and a lot less trouble to purchase VPC 7 for Mac with XP from eBay or Amazon raher than buying Win XP Home Edition separately.

I already downloaded Virtual PC 7 from Dreamspark and I have a windows xp disc
I have used the pre installed VPC 6/Win XP disks on several PPC Macs so can't give expert advice on the separate VPC 7 and Win XP installs.
What I would try is to first install the VPC 7 you downloaded. Then start the VPC 7 program with the XP install disk in place and follow the pics I have attached. These are from my VPC 6 WinXP installation on a 12" G4 Powerbook and I presume VPC 7 should be similar.
I have tried this vpc 7 wont boot from my xp disc and theres nothing wrong the my xp disc either
