Double booting with OS 10.4 Tiger/Os 9.2

Hello. I'd like to purchase and install OS 10.4 Tiger on my G4 Powermac (Model #: M8689 LL/A with the Mirrored Drive Doors). It came with Mac OS 10.2.1 and OS 9.2 installed. I very much need to maintain access to 9.2, at least for a while, in order to use my preferred older versions of ProTools, which are not supported in 10.4.
I have gotten different answers to the question 'Will i still be able to double boot, into either OS 9.2 or OS 10.4 as need be?' Some folks in the US told me no more double booting with 10.4, but the guys at the local Mac outlet here in Germany say, yes you can still double boot after installing Tiger--that it depends on the computer itself, not the software, and that with my particular powermac G4, it'll still double boot.
Can anyone confirm this one way or the other, and tell me anything i need to know when installing 10.4?

Yes.

Have you tried? do you still have your OS 9 partition? (and do you make sure to backup everything before upgrading).

Your restore disk #1, under the ".images" folder (hidden) has "OS9GENERAL.DMG" file. Copy that over, mount it, drag contents to your OS 9 partition.

It should work, but I really don't even install OS 9 drivers, I think things run better without, and if I did need OS 9, there is Classic.

There may be some PCI cards that need upgrading, and you may want to install more RAM, but Tiger is fine.

If your Mac could boot OS 9 before, it will still be able to with Tiger as long as the OS 9 drivers were installed on the drive. I can boot OS 9 or Tiger from the same disk with my Quicksilver.

Hi,

thanks for the rapid response. When you say back everything up, are you referring to everything on the drive that i'm going to install the 10.4 onto?

When you ask, 'have you tried' do you mean have i tried booting both from OS 10.2 and 9.2 (the currently installed OS's)? The answer is yes, it's no problem. My main concern is not being locked out of OS 9.2 after intalling 10.4 -- you seem to indicate that that wont happen, is that correct?

Adding more RAM does seem like a good idea--the guy in the MAC store said so too. I have two ram cards in there now, each 256 MG, i think. How much more RAM would you reccomend installing?

klar kannst du auch weiter mit OS 9 arbeiten. Allerdings gibt es da einige Dinge, die du berücksichtigen solltest. Sobald du dein OS 9 in den Systemeinstellungen als "Classic"-Umgebung angeklickt hast kann es zu Problem kommen. Deshalb wäre es ideal wenn du dein OS 9 "Nativ" auf einer eigenen Partition hättest und niemals als Classic angibst.

Ich hatte auf meinem alten Quicksilver folgende Konfiguration:
Partition 1: OS 9 "Nativ"
Partition 2: OS X + OS 9 "Classic"
Partition 3: Minimales OS X als Trouble-shooting partition.

Hat perfekt funktioniert, besonders weil du so beim Starten mit der alt-Taste zwischen den einzelnen System umschalten kannst.

P.S: 1 GB RAM ist ideal.

Hallo Gulliver,

ich bedanke mich für deine schnelle Antwort! Kannst du mir aber erzählen, was 'Nativ' bedeuten soll? Meinst du dass ich die OS9 selbst haben muss, wie ich es jetzt schon habe, im Vergleich zu der 'Classsic'Option? Ich weiß übrigens wie doof die Frage klinkt, aber nur sicher zu sein, frage ich dir. Ich bin beruflich, als auch im Leben von meinem Computer total abhängig, trotzdem weiß ich gar nichts wie es wirklich funktionieren soll.

Und, musste (sollte) ich zuerst mein Harddrive komplett löschen, bevor ich partiionen machen/Tiger installieren?

Hallo Stork,

die Classic Umgebung ist eine Emulation eines Betriebssystems (OS 9) in einem anderen Betriebssystem (MacOS X). Deshalb muss X auch mehrere Dateien im OS 9 Systemordner verändern und hinzufügen. Dies kann erhebliche Probleme bereiten wenn du den selben OS 9 Systemordner als natives Betriebssystem verwendest, also ohne Emulation (=Classic). Deshalb mein Vorschlag 2 separate Partitionen zu benützen.

Sowohl für die Classic Funktion als auch für ein natives OS 9 brauchst du in jedem Fall ein komplettes OS 9 - das du ja derzeit schon besitzt.

Um deine Festplatte zu partitionieren musst du sie neu formatieren. Dabei werden alle(!) Daten gelöscht! Deshalb musst du unbedingt ein komplettes Backup deiner Programme und Daten vorher erstellen.

Ich schlage folgende Vorgehensweise vor:
1. Starte von der OS 9 Ínstallations-CD (c-Taste während des Startens)
2. Formatiere und Partitioniere Deine Festplatte (Format: Apple Extended (HFS+))
3. Installiere auf beiden Partitionen OS 9 und stelle sicher, dass du von beiden Partitionen starten kannst.
4. Update beide OS 9 Systemordner auf 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
5. Starte von der MacOS X installations CD/DVD.
6. Installiere MacOS X nur auf einer Partition.
7. Update MacOS X mit dem Standalone Combo Update auf die aktuellste Version ( Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC). Vergiss nicht: Repair permissions before and after an update!
8. Nach dem Neustart öffne die Systemeinstellungen, klickt auf Classic und wähle jenen OS 9 Systemordner als Classic Umgebung, der auf der gleichen Partition wie OS X liegt.

Fertig! Ab sofort kannst du zwischen OS 9 und MacOS X während des Neustartes auswählen, wenn du beim Starten die alt-Taste gedrückt hältst.

noch mal besten Dank für alle deine Ratschläge! Ich schreibe dich wieder im Oktober, da ich fliege nächste Woche nach den USA (wo ich vielleicht eine neue Tiger system und RAM chips güstiger kaufen kann!).

übrigens, ich hab schon 9.2.2 installiert, d.h. ich kann deine 4. Ratschlag überspringen.

Ich hatte keine Ahnung, wie ich es alles installiern soll. Jetzt weiß ich!
