why cant i restore my daughters ipod 2nd gen to factory settings, itunes says that it can't be found

My ipod touch 2nd gen says to connect to itunes but when I do that it says that device is in restore mode and asks me if i want to restore to factory settings, When I select yes it says that it cannot restore device cannot be found??? How can I get the thing restored so my daughter can listen to her ipod again?

iPod touch, iOS 4.1
