Have outlines but can't see pictures.

I have read the other people's problems with this but they all seem to have been either doing something with the iphoto folder or in the middle of a proccess and cancelled it. I had imported some pictures into iphoto by dragging them from another folder into my open iphoto window. Everyhting seemed fine, I moved some of these and existing photos to the trash and emptied it. I closed iphoto and came back a couple of days later and now all I have is the outlines. If I select a photo the screen is blank but when I go to Get info in the menu It gives me all the dimensions and says that it is 3 MB. The pictures are all still in in the iphoto folder, but I just can't see them in the library. Can someone help me fix this please.

Jenn:

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First check in iPhoto's Advanced preference section and see if the checkbox titled "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library" is checked. If not then you've lost those pictures.

If it is checked you need to go to your Pictures/iPhoto/Originals folder and look for a folder with the same name as the roll in iPhoto that contains the problem files. If the full sized images are there then the database file is damaged and we have to work on that. Post back with what you find.

iPhoto 5 does not have that capability. Try the following;

1 - download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.

If no help then:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
  1. Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
  2. Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
  3. Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
  4. In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
  5. Click on the Create button.

Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.

See if either of the above will help.

If you have albums in the current library then they will be retained.

Actually, you should first try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It does not touch the original library so is a safe first try.
