I can't get the fades or crossfades to work in LP X. Help, please?

I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I can't find it anywhere online. I have about 4 takes of drums recorded. No fades work at all. The fade icon in the pdf manual is different than the one I have, which looks like this: >

I have used pro tools and its cake compared to this. I've searched tutorials and they just click on the fade tool and fade a track just like in pro tools. But for some reason mine doesn't even do that. Any suggestions? I also see no option to "Flatten stack". Not sure if the two are related.
