How do I fix that at startup, restart Mavericks 10.9.2 always opens the system preference window?

How do I fix that at startup, restart Mavericks 10.9.2 always opens the system preference window?

It is not listed in Login items. I tried all the usual fixes plus Diskwarrior rebuild.

No idea. Of course I assume you quit System Preferences before shutting down. Does it open to any particular Preference pane, or is it the one that appears at Show All? Does it occur in Safe Mode? Are any preference panes other than the default Apple set installed? Does your account have any other Login Items present? Did you try creating another User account to determine if it occurs in it as well?

You may have tried one or more of these already, apologies for repeating the obvious.

"I assume you quit System Preferences before shutting down" : yes

"is it the one that appears at Show All?": yes

"Does it occur in Safe Mode?" can't tell, does not finish safe mode boot: is my other problem.

Are any preference panes other than the default Apple set installed? no

Does your account have any other Login Items present? yes

Did you try creating another User account to determine if it occurs in it as well? no, will check that now.

In your own User account > Login Items, select each one and prevent it from loading at login by clicking the "–" (minus) button. This does not delete the programs, it simply prevents them from loading when you log in. Determine if you can isolate the cause to one of them. Remember what they are so that you can add them again later, if it does not fix the problem.

Hi John and thanks for trying to help me.

I thought I had no problem remembering the Adobe login item I turned off per your instructions.

But I don't, I do have a lot of Adobe stuff on my computer: Reader, Flash, PSE, Media player, Dreamweaver CS4, Fireworks CS4, Bridge CS4 Extension Manager CS4. I figured clicking the plus sign it would let me put back what I just turned off, no it showed a 'sillian files which I did not recognize. I am still getting the All window on re-start after turning of the Adobe....? file. I know something is going to bark at me if I don't turn it back on. I should have taken the screen shot I am posting before i turned of anything. Any idea what it might have been? This is what is left in Login items:

Thanks for your help,

Walter

I suggest deleting the Canon Network Scanner from Login Items to determine if that is the cause. Not knowing exactly what it does, I suspect it is intended to monitor the printer's supply levels all the time. It's not necessary to do that. You can always determine the printer's ink supply level every time you print something, when its Print dialog appears. You can also check its supply levels by opening System Preferences on your own, and selecting Printers & Scanners.

Bear in mind Login Items is simply a convenience that loads the programs you specify every time you log in. That feature is less important as it had been in the past since Mavericks will re-open everything that was open when you last logged out, if you select this checkbox:

User uploaded file

If you want to add the Adobe programs to Login Items again, search for them using Spotlight. The Adobe programs themselves should not be causing this behavior.

From that other thread....which resolved my issue and may help yours...although I see now that this has already been suggested...I don't read so good...

I got the problem solved with a little IT help from university

Under the Shutdown Menu Item in the Apple menu, I had accidentally checked the box for 'Reopen windows when logging back in" option.

(I am a new Mac user and until this post had not noticed this check button when shutting down or restarting. I believe that check box defaults as checked. Unchecking it solved my problem.)

How do I fix that at startup, restart Mavericks 10.9.2 always opens the system preference window?
