My iMac keeps getting a flashing ? on startup and takes 5 or 6 times before I get the apple logo, any ideas ?

Try this. Go to System Preferences, click Startup Disk, click your hard drive icon (you might have to unlock the padlock in the bottom left corner with your Mac's admin password first), then relock the padlock and close the window. See if that helps next time you reboot.
