After upgrading to 10.8.5, my laptop converts all uppercase letters to lower case automatically. How can I fix this?

I can only get the uppercase to "stick" by going back, highlighting, and changing. This is incredibly problematic for typing any work-related material. help!

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
